Free online metronome
A simple, accurate metronome for piano, guitar or any instrument: choose the tempo, the beats per bar and the subdivision, or tap the tempo.
Practising with a metronome
- Start slowly: pick a tempo at which you play everything without a mistake, even if it feels very slow.
- Go up in small steps: a few beats more each time a passage is clean three times in a row.
- Listen for the downbeat: the louder click marks the start of each bar.
- Silent bars: the metronome drops out one bar in two (or two in four) to check that your pulse holds on its own.
Common tempos
