William Smallwood (1831–1897)

An English organist and teacher, Smallwood wrote a piano tutor that was hugely popular in Victorian times, along with easy little pieces such as The Harebell.

William Smallwood was born in 1831 in Kendal, in north-west England, and spent his whole life there: for many years he was organist of the town’s parish church, and he taught the piano. He died in Kendal in 1897.

His Pianoforte Tutor was a huge success in Britain and was reprinted for decades. He also wrote many little pieces for pupils, often inspired by nature, such as The Harebell.

His simple, charming music is typical of the Victorian domestic repertoire: it teaches beginners reading, phrasing and a singing touch.
