Little Prelude in C major (BWV 943)

Johann Sebastian Bach · Level 3 (Late beginner) · Baroque · Piano

The last of the Five Little Preludes BWV 939–943: a piece in 3/4 whose eighth-note lines imitate each other between the hands, then thicken into three voices over a long C pedal. One of the little preludes Bach wrote around 1720 for his pupils, handed down mainly in copies by his circle (Johann Peter Kellner): short pieces, ideal before tackling the Inventions. C major, 3/4, 58 bars (about 3 minutes), complete score.

How to practise it

  • Listen first: the site plays it while the score scrolls.
  • Wait mode: the score waits for you at every note, at your own pace.
  • Tempo challenge: play in time, with a score and a map of the bars you got right.
  • Both hands are equal: practise them separately until you can sing each one. At the end the left hand holds the low C while its upper voice moves. No pedal: legato comes from the fingers. Practise hands separately in Wait mode, then put them together slowly. One hand sometimes plays two voices: hold the long notes for their full value and let the main line sing louder than the accompaniment. For chords, shape the hand in the air before landing, all notes together.
