Domenico Scarlatti · Level 5 (Advanced) · Baroque · Piano

A lively, luminous Allegro sonata in 3/8 in A major, racing in one sweep of eighths and sixteenths. One of the 555 one-movement sonatas Scarlatti wrote for the harpsichord, usually in two repeated halves, brilliant and full of Iberian colour. A major, 3/8, 172 bars (about 2 minutes), complete score.

How to practise it

  • Listen first: the site plays it while the score scrolls.
  • Wait mode: the score waits for you at every note, at your own pace.
  • Tempo challenge: play in time, with a score and a map of the bars you got right.
  • Count one beat per bar once the notes are secure; first practise each half slowly. Light, precise touch, loose wrists in the repeated notes and hand crossings. Triplets and other tuplets must be perfectly even: count them aloud with the metronome. For chords, shape the hand in the air before landing, all notes together.
