Whole-tone haze

Note after Note · Level 3 (Late beginner) · 20th century · Piano

An impressionist sketch on the whole-tone scale: no half steps, so no note ever feels like “home”. The two whole-tone scales alternate over arpeggiated augmented chords.

How to practise it

  • Listen first: the site plays it while the score scrolls.
  • Wait mode: the score waits for you at every note, at your own pace.
  • Tempo challenge: play in time, with a score and a map of the bars you got right.
  • Right hand: five notes, five fingers — C, D, E, F♯, G♯, then D♭, E♭, F, G, A. No thumb crossings. Left hand 5-3-1 on stacked major thirds (augmented chords). Pedal down for each bar: let the sounds blur together like mist.
