Fantasia in D minor (K. 397)
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart · Level 4 (Intermediate) · Classical · Piano
An unfinished fantasia (1782): an arpeggiated prelude, a D minor Adagio interrupted by free runs, then a bright Allegretto in D major. A keyboard work by Mozart, a model of Classical balance and clarity. D minor, 2/2, 123 bars (about 5 minutes), complete score.

How to practise it
- Listen first: the site plays it while the score scrolls.
- Wait mode: the score waits for you at every note, at your own pace.
- Tempo challenge: play in time, with a score and a map of the bars you got right.
- The free runs (cadenzas) each sit in one unmetered bar: play them freely, speeding up then slowing down. The grace notes and the trill are not written here. With Mozart clarity comes first: even runs, light left hand, no unnecessary pedal. Triplets and other tuplets must be perfectly even: count them aloud with the metronome. For chords, shape the hand in the air before landing, all notes together.
