Little Prelude in C major (BWV 933)

Johann Sebastian Bach · Level 3 (Late beginner) · Baroque · Piano

The first of the Six Little Preludes BWV 933–938 (around 1720), handed down in a copy by Johann Peter Kellner: a small piece in two repeated halves, with the right hand singing in thirds and sixths above a sixteenth-note bass. One of the little preludes Bach wrote around 1720 for his pupils, handed down mainly in copies by his circle (Johann Peter Kellner): short pieces, ideal before tackling the Inventions. C major, 4/4, 16 bars (about one minute), complete score.

How to practise it

  • Listen first: the site plays it while the score scrolls.
  • Wait mode: the score waits for you at every note, at your own pace.
  • Tempo challenge: play in time, with a score and a map of the bars you got right.
  • Keep the left-hand sixteenths light and even; in the right hand, the two voices must strike exactly together. The edition’s ornaments (mordents, trills) are not written here. No pedal: legato comes from the fingers. Practise hands separately in Wait mode, then put them together slowly. One hand sometimes plays two voices: hold the long notes for their full value and let the main line sing louder than the accompaniment. For chords, shape the hand in the air before landing, all notes together.
