Appalachian hoedown in open D

Note after Note · Level 3 (Late beginner) · study · Guitar, sheet music and tablature

An original dance tune in open D, built like an old-time fiddle tune (two 4-bar parts, each repeated), in the manner of the pieces Jack Rose played with The Black Twig Pickers (2009): an eighth-note tune on every half-beat, the thumb on every beat, the G and A chords as barres at frets 5 and 7.

How to practise it

  • Listen first: the site plays it while the score scrolls.
  • Wait mode: the score waits for you at every note, at your own pace.
  • Tempo challenge: play in time, with a score and a map of the bars you got right.
  • Open D: strings 6, 1 and 5 down a whole step, string 3 down a half step. D chord open, G = barre at fret 5, A = barre at fret 7: the thumb stays on strings 6 and 4 at the same fret. Play slowly at first counting “1 and 2 and”: the bass falls on the numbers, the tune alone on the “ands”.
