Dr. Ragtime rag in open G

Note after Note · Level 4 (Intermediate) · study · Guitar, sheet music and tablature

An original rag in open G on the ragtime progression (G – E7 – A7 – D7 – G), a tribute to Jack Rose as “Dr. Ragtime” (Dr. Ragtime & His Pals, 2008): alternating thumb bass, a syncopated tune, a repeated A part then a B part on the C chord (barre at fret 5). It is not a transcription of Rose.

How to practise it

  • Listen first: the site plays it while the score scrolls.
  • Wait mode: the score waits for you at every note, at your own pace.
  • Tempo challenge: play in time, with a score and a map of the bars you got right.
  • In open G: E7 = 6th string 2nd fret, 4th string 2nd fret, 3rd string 1st fret (the open high D gives the seventh); A7 = small barre at fret 2; D7 = 5th string 2nd fret, 2nd string 1st fret, 1st string 4th fret. Bar 2: the B♭ (3rd string, 3rd fret) rising to the open B is the rag’s blue note. Bar 13: play the low A at the 7th fret of the 6th string to reach the high A (7th fret, 1st string).
