The first of the “25 Melodic and Progressive Studies” (1852): C major scales in eighth notes covering the whole first register, punctuated by chords.

How to practise it

• Rest strokes (apoyando), strictly alternating i-m. The upper runs reach the 8th fret: shift the hand as a block, sliding a guide finger.
