Louis Streabbog (Jean-Louis Gobbaerts) (1835–1886)
A Belgian pianist who often signed himself « Streabbog » — his name Gobbaerts spelt backwards — and wrote many easy, tuneful pieces for young pianists.
Jean-Louis Gobbaerts was born in Antwerp in 1835, studied at the Brussels Conservatoire and worked as a pianist and teacher in Belgium. He died in 1886 in Saint-Gilles, near Brussels.
He published several hundred pieces, often under pseudonyms, the best known being « Streabbog », simply his name written backwards. Most are dances, fantasies on opera tunes and pieces for beginners.
His Very Easy and Melodious Studies Op. 63 and Op. 64 and his little waltzes have stayed in the repertoire of the first years of piano: they teach reading, steadiness and the pleasure of playing a pretty tune.
