Paolo Spagnoletti (1834)

An Italian violinist based in London, leader of the Italian opera orchestra there, who published ballroom dances for keyboard.

Paolo Spagnoletti was an Italian violinist who worked in London in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. For many years he was leader of the orchestra of the King’s Theatre, the home of Italian opera, and he also played in the Philharmonic Society’s concerts.

Like many orchestral musicians of his time, he published dances for society balls — waltzes, quadrilles, country dances — often dedicated to members of the aristocracy, such as The Countess of Farnham’s Waltz or La Dorset.

These light pieces give an idea of the music people danced to and played at home in Regency England.
