Matteo Carcassi (1792–1853)

An Italian guitarist based in Paris, Carcassi wrote the famous Method Op. 59 and the 25 Melodic Studies Op. 60, essential steps in classical guitar.

Born in Florence in 1792, Matteo Carcassi became a virtuoso guitarist and performed in Germany, England and France. He settled in Paris, then the capital of the guitar, where he taught and published his works.

His Complete Method for the Guitar, Op. 59, was hugely successful and is still reprinted. His 25 Melodic and Progressive Studies, Op. 60, are played by nearly every guitar student.

He also wrote many fantasies on opera tunes, very popular in his day. He died in Paris in 1853.

His style is clear, brilliant and melodious. His studies teach arpeggios, scales, slurs and position shifts, always in the form of a pleasant little piece.
