Franz Behr (1837–1898)
A German composer of salon music and little pieces for beginners, found in many piano method books.
Franz Behr was born in 1837 in Lübtheen, Mecklenburg, and died in Dresden in 1898. He published a large amount of piano music, sometimes under pseudonyms (William Cooper, Charles Morley, Francesco d’Orso).
His catalogue consists mostly of dances and salon pieces for amateurs, as well as very easy pieces for children, which have stayed in teaching anthologies.
These little pieces are valuable for beginners: a simple tune, a steady accompaniment, clear four-bar phrasing — a chance to work on phrasing and hand balance with pleasant music.
