Dionisio Aguado (1784–1849)

A guitarist and teacher from Madrid and a friend of Fernando Sor, Dionisio Aguado wrote an influential guitar method and studies still taught today.

Born in Madrid in 1784, Dionisio Aguado devoted himself to the guitar and published an Escuela de guitarra in 1825, followed by a Nuevo método (1843). These very detailed methods cover posture, tone, scales and arpeggios.

From about 1826 to 1838 he lived in Paris, where he knew Fernando Sor, who dedicated the duo Les Deux Amis to him. Yet the two guitarists had different ideas: Aguado played with the nails, Sor with the fingertips. Aguado also devised a stand, the “tripodison”, so that the guitar could vibrate freely.

He later returned to Madrid, where he died in 1849. His studies, from the simplest to the most virtuosic, remain a mainstay of classical guitar teaching.
